Follow-up of patients with breast cancer


The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends follow-up monitoring of women with breast cancer consisting of monthly breast self-examination, annual mammography, and a careful history and physical examination every 3 to 6 months for 3 years, then every 6 to 12 months for 2 years, and then annually.

Follow up According to the risk of Recurrence:
Asses for  Symptoms / Signs for recurrence, examine breasts and nodal areas

Stage I Breast Cancer (optional and at the discretion of the physicians)
Baseline History and Physical  Examination and Tests : CXR, Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis and bone scan
Every 4-6 months bloodwork  for CBC,LFT
Blood tests cholesterol and blood sugar once a year by family physician
Every  4 months history and physical examination and  ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis for 2 years and then every 6 months for 5 yrs and then every year.

 

 



Stage II Breast Cancer   
Baseline History and Physical  Examination and Tests : CXR,Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis and bone scan
Every 4-6 months bloodwork  for CBC,LFT
Blood tests: cholesterol and blood sugar once a year by family physician
Every  4 months history and physical examination and  ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis for 2years and then every 6 months for 5 yrs and then every year.

 

 

 

Stage III Breast Cancer  
Baseline History and Physical  Examination and Tests : CXR,Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis and bone scan
Every 4-6 months bloodwork  for CBC,LFT
Blood tests: cholesterol and blood sugar once a year by family physician
Every  4 months history and physical examination and  ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis for 2years and then every 6 months for 5 yrs and then every year.

 

 

 

Stage IV Breast Cancer  
Follow up every 3 months and tests according to the discretion of the physicians 
End of life care and support services if the performance status is below 40
Pain control needs to be discussed   

 

Other tests: Muga Scan pre treatment before  an anthracycline or herceptin.If on Herceptin muga scan every 3 months and at completion every year and at discretion of physician. Bone Mineral Density  once a year  for patients on aromatase inhibitor or early menopause and the once a year or at the discretion of the physician
